How to Use a Micrometer

Many devices can be used to ensure that dimensions are correct, with varying degrees of accuracy.

Tape measures, calipers, optical comparators, and many more types of measuring tools can be used to make measurements. One of the most notable and accurate tools for measuring is a micrometer. A micrometer is a powerful tool for checking dimensions, but understanding exactly what a micrometer is, what it can be used for, and how to use it is essential to make accurate measurements.

Before measuring, to measure the error, turn the knob directly and stop turning when the click comes out. If the alignment is not zero scale, you need to subtract this part during the measurement process, and then measure, hold the ruler holder with your left hand, turn the knob with your right hand, when a click sound is made to end the rotation, read the length at this time, end.

Micrometer classification

Current micrometers are classified according to ease of reading, and they can be divided into mechanical micrometers and electronic micrometers. Mechanical micrometer is a more common type, you need to manually read, electronic micrometer can directly display the length of the measured object, eliminating your reading this link

Tape measure, caliper, optical comparator and micrometer are measuring devices used to measure planes or different geometric shapes. For example, the inside diameter or thickness of a pipe. A micrometer is mainly composed of a graduated sleeve, a graduated thimble, a vernierand two surfaces, namely anvil and spindle. The thimble and spindle are connected to a high-precision screw for moving the spindle to a precise and measurable distance

What is a Micrometer

Many devices can be used to ensure the correctness of dimensions, with varying degrees of accuracy.

The micrometer is limited in the distance that can be used for measurement. They are usually divided into different measuring range windows.

The three main types of micrometers are:

  1. Internal micrometer – used to measure internal dimensions.
  2. Outside micrometer – used to measure the outside diameter dimension.
  3. Depth micrometer – used to measure depth dimensions.
  4. Each part of the interaction is in line with the requirements, and check its “0”, such as damage can not be removed by their own micrometer.
  5. After using the micrometer, clean it with a clean cotton cloth and apply anti-rust oil, and protect the two measuring surface

How to Use a Micrometer

Different types of micrometers require very subtle and different operating procedures. This section will focus only on external metric micrometers.

  1. Ensure that the measured object is safe by clamping or some type of fixture.
  2. After fixing the parts, pick up a micrometer with appropriate size and loosen it with a thimble until the spindle and anvil can be placed outside the surface of the measured parts.
  3. The spindle and anvil should start pressing the parts at the same time. The thimble here should not be too hard. Too much force will make the measurement deviation less than the actual size of the part. Many micrometers have a ratchet on the thimble to prevent this from happening.
  4. Use the micrometer carefully, in case you drop it or get hit, check the micrometer immediately.

Micrometer measurement

Before use, the two measuring anvil surface should be wiped clean, rotating force measuring device, so that the two measuring anvil surface contac, the contact surface should be no gap and light leakage phenomenon, at the same time differential cylinder and fixed sleeve simply aligned with zero.

When rotating the force measuring device, the differential cylinder should move freely and flexibly along the fixed sleeve without any clamping and inflexible phenomenon. If the activity is not flexible, it should be sent to the measuring station for timely maintenance.

Once the anvil and spindle are in contact with the part at the same time, the scale of the micrometer can now be read.

How to Read a Micrometer Scale

The traditional measurement system consists of two or three different micrometers.

There are two main types of micrometer systems: traditional scale systems and digital scale systems. When used together, the measured value of the evaluated component is displayed to the user of the micrometer.  To illustrate how to read the traditional proportional system, please see the following example :

  1. The first part of the measurement is determined by micrometer type. This gives a basic measurement of 100 mm. When the thimble rotates, the barrel scale moves between the sleeve scale and the vernier scale.
  2. The sleeve scale (lower left scale) in the above figure determines the lower two digits and the first decimal point of the size, and the result is 55.5 mm.

Micrometer features

  1. After determining this, use the barrel scale to obtain additional decimal millimeter measurements, which will be added to the 105.5mm already measured on the sleeve scale. Using the barrel scale , it is found that the first two decimal places are 0.28mm.
  2. On the other hand,a micrometer is easier to read. There are still all the same parts, but the main difference is that when the thimble rotates, a digital reading is generated. Digital micrometer has great advantages in saving time and reducing operating errors. However, generally speaking, they are more expensive.
  3. Use force measuring device correctly so that the measurement can be carried out at the correct force.
  4. When the micrometer is installed on the workbench, the workbench should be fixed and clamped in the center of the micrometer frame.

Precautions when using a Micrometer

There are many things to be careful of when using a micrometer

  1. Carefully check the type, measuring range, accuracy and other specifications to select the right model for your purpose.
  2. Before measurement, the micrometer and workpiece should be kept at room temperature for a long enough time to balance  temperature.
  3. Reading differential cylinder engraving line directly look at the reference line. If you look at the scale line from a certain Angle, you will not be able to read the correct position of the line due to visual error.
  4. Before measuring, adjust the starting point and wipe the measuring surface and measuring screw of the measuring anvil with non-fluff paper.
  5. As part of routine maintenance, wipe away any dust. Also, carefully wipe any stains and fingerprints with dry cloth.

Micrometer care tips

  1. Reading method: for the screw exposed to the scale, each case represents 0.5mm, in the case of not reaching the accurate scale line, read the scale on the knob. The scale on the knob for each 0.01mm, is estimated to read 0.001mm.

  2. The use of micrometer is relatively simple, more difficult is its reading, accidentally there will be reading dislocation, so in the use of micrometer, need to master its reading, by measuring a few readings can be skilled.

  3. Be careful not to drop or hit anything with a micrometer. Do not turn the micrometer screw hard. If you think the micrometer may be damaged by accidental misoperation, please check its accuracy further before use.

Micrometer maintenance

First of all: will be stained in each part of the dirt and fingerprints with a dry cloth carefully wipe clean.

If long-term preservation and dry without oil, with a cloth coated with anti-rust oil wipe a thin layer of oil, although it may leave oil stains and spots on the alloy measuring surface, but if not used for a long time, this will ensure that your micrometer performance lasting oh.

  1. Keep a micrometer in a place with no direct sunlight, less humidity, good ventilation and less dust.
  2. remember to keep in the storage box, do not directly placed on the ground.
  3.  The most important point: open about 0.1-1mm storage between the two measuring surfaces, and do not lock the device tightly to prevent failures in the storage process.

Do not operate micrometer

Do not measure blank or rough surface of the workpiece, as well as rotating or heating workpiece, so as not to damage the measuring surface or get incorrect reading.

It is absolutely not allowed to rotate the differential cylinder to increase the measuring pressure, so that the micro screw is too tight on the surface of the parts, resulting in the deformation of the precision thread due to excessive force, and damage the accuracy of the dial ruler. Sometimes forced rotation differential cylinder, although the connection between differential cylinder and micro screw is not firm, the damage to the precision thread is not serious, but the differential cylinder after slipping, the zero of the dial ruler will cause quality accidents.

Micrometer precautions

  1. Micrometer should be kept in humidity of 50%-60%.The micrometer screw and working surface shall not be directly touched by hand. Gloves should be worn. After the micrometer is used, clean it with a clean cloth.
  2. A Micrometer must be scrubbed and maintained on time. It is an important measure to prevent corrosion, scratches on the measuring surface and unsmooth movement.
  3. To this end, before the detection of the use of micrometer measurement surface. Careful operation should be carried out to avoid collision and fall.
  4. After long storage or protective film,a micrometer lightly with a cloth soaked in corrosion-resistant oil.
